Fitzpatrick Sweeps in 14 Diving

Winning never gets old for Lizzie Fitzpatrick. The Tokeneke diver swept the 1- and 3-meter 14-and-under competitions in Monday's Fairfield County Swimming League championships at Shorehaven Golf Club. "I could have done better, but I thought it was fun,'' Lizzie said. "I don't know if expected to win both, but I'm glad I did."

Fitzpatrick swept the competition last year as well. This time, she won the 1-meter with a score of 265.35, nearly 46 points better than runner-up Kirsten Parkinson of the Long Ridge Club. Olivia Hoelzer of New Canaan Field Club took third. In the 3-meter, Fitzpatrick won by nearly 58 points. Parkinson took second and Kyla Pech of Wee Burn grabbed third.

Lizzie returned last week from the Speedo Junior National Championships where she finished second on the 3-meter, fourth on the 1-meter and ninth on platform. "I have harder dives on the 3-meter, and it's fun to go up higher,'' she says.

Fitzpatrick competes for the Whirlwind Diving Team based at the New Canaan YMCA with coach Joe Somma when she's not with the Tokeneke team. She will get about a month's rest before the fall season starts for divers. "It will be nice to relax for a little bit, but I really like diving,'' Lizzie says.
